An island of Hawaii northwest of Oahu. It was an independent royal domain when visited by Capt. James Cook in 1778 and became part of the kingdom of Hawaii in 1810.

KAPAA, Hawaii -- If you stay in Kauai long enough, you'll hear locals talk about the power of Hawaii's oldest island.
The list may soon get shorter in the lowlands on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where flies have targeted a type of cricket that originally came to Hawaii from the western Pacific.
