Kau·nas  (kouns, -näs)
A city of central Lithuania on the Neman River south of Riga. Founded in the 11th century, it was a medieval trading post and a Lithuanian stronghold against the Teutonic Knights. Russia acquired the city in the third partition of Poland (1795). Population: 358,000.
