Kealakekua Bay

Ke·a·la·ke·ku·a Bay  (kl-k-k)
An inlet of the Pacific Ocean on the western coast of Hawaii Island. Capt. James Cook landed here (January 1779) during his second voyage to the islands and was killed (February 14) during a beach fight with the islanders.

The beach at Honaunau, just south of famed Kealakekua Bay -- where British Capt.
The Big Island's other harbors aren't much more attractive: Kealakekua Bay, the best of the lot, is mostly a marine park, with no anchoring allowed; manmade Honokohau Harbor is nearly landlocked, but it's dominated by fishing craft; Kailua-Kona is full of coral heads; and breakwatered Kawaihae is mostly used by commercial vessels.
Sahlins does not challenge Obeyesekere's first plank - indeed, he scarcely mentions it except to point out that the Europeans' willingness to think that Cook was taken for a god in itself tells us little about what happened in Kealakekua Bay.
