American actor who wrote, directed, and starred in silent film classics, such as The Navigator (1924) and The General (1926), in which he employed a deadpan expression and acrobatic artistry to great comedic effect.

Still, as in Annie Hall, the chemistry between Allen, Diane Keaton, and New York is wondrous, and nobody makes love to a city better than this comic director.
