In 1544, twenty years after the Spanish conquest of Mesoamerica and several decades before coffee or tea were known in Europe, a Kekchi Maya delegation introduced cacao to the court of Phillip II of Spain. But the company is now fighting a legal battle with the Kekchi and Mopan Maya, who call these jungles their traditional home, but were cut out of the decision-making process. The cultural spectrum of Belize ranges from Creole and Garifuna, Kekchi and Mopan Maya, to Spanish, British and a thriving Mennonite community. |
