In 1989, she almost single-handedly took on the ruling party, the Kenya African National Union, and President Daniel arap Moi by opposing the construction of a 62-storey building in Uhuru Park, Nairobi's largest public park. The task force was set up following last December's elections that defeated the ruling Kenya African National Union party, which had been in power for 40 years and had faced allegations of corruption and human rights abuses. The Kenya African National Union (KANU), the party that had been in power since independence, lost the elections, as did the former president's preferred candidate. |
