The Russian Decimation of the Khanty: In Western Siberia, oil drilling led to fires and pollution that destroyed 22 million hectares of reindeer pasture, disrupting the livelihood of the Khanty people, who depend on reindeer herding and fishing.
Sidanko's latest attempt to regain control of its bankrupt 50,000 b/d producer Varyoganneftegaz (VNG) was blocked in late July 2000 by a Khanty Mansiysk court, which reversed a decision for Sidanko-proposed external manager Anatoly Balyakin to run VNG.
