Khu·jand or Khu·dzhand (k -jänd ) A city of northwest Tajikistan on the Syr Darya River south of Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Located on an ancient caravan route, it is one of the oldest towns of central Asia and marked the farthest eastward expansion of Alexander the Great. Russia annexed the city in 1866. From 1936 to 1992 the city was named Leninabad. Population: 147,000. |
