Khujand

Khu·jand or Khu·dzhand  (k-jänd)
A city of northwest Tajikistan on the Syr Darya River south of Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Located on an ancient caravan route, it is one of the oldest towns of central Asia and marked the farthest eastward expansion of Alexander the Great. Russia annexed the city in 1866. From 1936 to 1992 the city was named Leninabad. Population: 147,000.

Recently, 3 lyssaviruses (Aravan, Khujand [6], and Irkut [4] viruses) were isolated from bats in different locations of Asia.
However, in light of those developments, the Secretary-General on 8 February authorized the suspension of all United Nations activities in Tajikistan, as well as the relocation to the neighbouring Uzbekistan, in two stages, of all UN personnel, except for a small UNMOT team in Dushanbe and a civilian liaison office in Khujand.
However, 16 samples had detectable neutralizing antibodies against Aravan virus, Khujand virus, Irkut virus, or Australian bat lyssavirus; all were specifically associated with fruit bats P.
