Korean Air launched services from Incheon to Kota Kinabalu (four-times-weekly), Pattaya (thrice-weekly), Kathmandu (weekly), Phnom Penh (four-times-weekly) and Siem Reap (four-times-weekly) while expanding services to Beijing and Shanghai in partnership with Shanghai Airlines. This rivalry was fought out in the pages of the Daily Express and the Kinabalu Sabah Times, which were controlled, respectively, by interests close to Berjaya and USNO.
