Kirkwood gaps  (kûrkwd)
Specific regions in the asteroid belt where few asteroids are found. The Kirkwood gaps are believed to have formed as a consequence of gravitational interactions of asteroids with Jupiter, which resulted in the movement of the asteroids from within this area into another orbit, leaving the area sparsely populated. The Kirkwood gaps are named after the American astronomer Daniel Kirkwood (1814-1895), who first observed them in 1866.

Called Kirkwood gaps, they are thought to be cleared of debris by Jupiter's gravity, which causes any objects orbiting there to move chaotically.
21 Which planet's gravitational effect is responsible for the Kirkwood Gaps, where few asteroids are to be found?
For example, an asteroid in a Kirkwood gap with a 3:1 resonance circles around the sun exactly three times for every one revolution of Jupiter.
