THe reason it is sometimes called the kissing disease, is that Epstein Barr virus is transmitted through the saliva exchange that occurs when you kiss someone.
The GIANTmicrobes line includes The Common Cold, the Flu, Sore Throat, Stomach Ache and Kissing Disease just to name a few.
The virus is found in large numbers in saliva which is why it is sometimes called the kissing disease but it can be caught from standing too close to an infected person who sneezes.
