A lake on the border of Congo (formerly Zaire) and Rwanda north of Lake Tanganyika. It is situated at an altitude of 1,461 m (4,790 ft) and is Africa's highest lake.

The Soviet era Antonov 28 plane was flying in low cloud as it approached the airport at Bukavu in the South Kivu province when it clipped a mountainside and plunged into the forest in flames.
