Even as black militia companies, post-Reconstruction, were forcibly eliminated, "quasi-military" secret and fraternal orders like Savannah's Knights of Pythias in 1906 took over: "the men in uniform may not have been in the militia, but the local black newspaper reported their maneuvers as though they were. Jud was chancellor of the Knights of Pythias and past president of the Knollwood Men's Golf Club among other things. It turns out all those silly-sounding civic associations--ranging from the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Eastern Star to the Knights of Pythias and the Loyal Order of Moose--were critical. |
