The developer, Richard Kooris, an Austin entrepreneur with a 30-year history of redeveloping East Austin warehouses for office and studio use, spearheaded the project that mixes space for living, working and shopping. Over the years this has involved the exclusion of native elements -- Kooris, convicts, certain migrant communities -- from any active part in the construction of an Australian national character. We've been particularly keen this year to help those who will speak for the disadvantaged sections of our community -- gays, lesbians, Kooris, women, ethnics, ethnic gays and lesbians, Koori and women ethnics, gay Koori analphabetics -- and we've done what we can, but we are painfully aware that countless deserving young people have had to go without. |
