Rising costs Costs had doubled over the past year because of the fall in the krona currency and high import tariffs on imported goods, Ogmundsson said, making it impossible for the company to raise prices further and remain competitive with competitors that use locally sourced produce.
He told Reuters that the decision to close the restaurants was mainly due to the severe depreciation of the Icelandic krona and high taxes on imported food.
Ogmundsson said the restaurants import their goods from Germany, but costs had doubled because the falling krona has made imports prohibitively expensive.
