The People's Liberation Army successfully drove Chiang Kai-shek's ruling Nationalists, or Kuomintang (KMT), off the mainland to the island of Taiwan where they and their Western allies for many years kept alive the fiction that the KMT still governed the mainland.
Under the one-party dictatorship of Kuomintang (Nationalist Party) rule from 1945 to 1987, the hegemonic discourses in Taiwan characterized both the form of economic development and the content of national identity as something immutably Chinese.
Mainland Chinese news sources quoted the reported comments of Zhang Xiaoyan, the head of the Kuomintang (KMT), who described the aid package for Kosovo as "Taiwan's best move to facilitate its strategic security.
