In a study carried out at the University of Kuopio in Finland, 50 subjects with slightly elevated cholesterol levels consumed an oat drink and spread fortified with plant stanol ester (plant stanols 9 grams/day) for 10 weeks or similar control products with no plant stanol ester.
According to a report in National Geographic News, the study was carried out by Surendra Pradhan, an environmental scientist at University of Kuopio in Finland.
Elevated cholesterol levels in midlife--even levels considered only borderline elevated--increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia later in life, according to researchers at Kaiser Permanente's Division of Research and the University of Kuopio in Finland.
