A recent study tried replacing saturated fat with either protein (2/3 plant protein and 1/3 animal protein), carbohydrate, or monounsaturated fat (canola and olive oil, nuts and seeds) and then determining the effect of this on blood pressure and LDL (bad) cholesterol.
Participants who took 20 grams of isolated soy protein daily, experienced significantly greater decreases in LDL C (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) and LDL P (low-density lipoprotein particle number) independent indicators for coronary heart disease.
Statins like Lipitor and Pravachol lower both LDL ("bad") cholesterol and CRP, a measure of inflammation.
