Chinese authorities have arrested more than 100,000 members of the Falun Gong religious movement and sent at least 20,000 to labor camps. This is actually a case of truth in labeling, since these Chinese labor camps were established on Saipan, a territorial possession of the United States. During the resulting intense but brief season of cultural debates, Chinese intellectuals spoke out in growing dissent against Mao's dictatorship; the government responded with brutal repression, arresting, killing, or deporting them to labor camps and banning freedom of thought and speech. |
