The part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, on the North American mainland. Its coastline was visited by Norse seamen as early as the tenth century. The area later became a possession of the Hudson's Bay Company and was claimed by Quebec until 1927, when it was awarded to Newfoundland.
