A city of northeast Pakistan near the Indian border southeast of Rawalpindi. The city reached the height of its grandeur as a Mogul capital in the 16th century and retains many splendid architectural examples from that period. Population: 6,310,000.

Shah Jahan did not even excite the imagination of his contemporaries, nor did he have a biographer of the stature of Abu'l Fazl or Khafi Khan, so the material we have about him comes from fragmentary references by foreign travellers and the brief account of his life in the 20 years between the time he was 16 and his accession in 1628 by Abdul Hamid Lahori in his classic, Padshahnama.
