Lju·blja·na (l  bl -ä n , lyblyä-nä) The capital and largest city of Slovenia, in the central part of the country on the Sava River northwest of Zagreb, Croatia. Founded by Augustus in 34 b.c., it came under Hapsburg rule in a.d. 1277. In 1919 it passed to Yugoslavia, remaining under its rule until Slovenian independence in 1991. Population: 247,000. |
