ROME -- The Vatican has once again rejected petitions from the Diocese of San Cristobal de las Casas in southern Mexico for a semi-independent church, reports the Spanish news service ACI Prensa.
A counterpoint appeared almost immediately, in 1522, when the Dominican reformer Bartolome de Las Casas penned a flaming diatribe condemning the conquerors as cruel, greedy, and violent.
