The occasion for the talks was the annual Italian-Vatican meeting to mark the anniversary of the 1929 Lateran Pact governing relations between the two sides. Unofficial negotiations began in 1926 and concluded almost three years later with the signing of three documents known as the Lateran Pacts. The case is expected to test the constitutionality of the Lateran Pact because the 440-hectare site with its forests of antennae north of Rome is considered part of the sovereign Vatican state. |
