The Goro project in New Caledonia, touted as "one of the largest deposits of lateritic nickel in the world," will account for $723 million of spending in 2008.
To the east lie the mountains of Sierra de Nipe, Sierra Cristal and Sierra de Moa, which mainly consist of large bodies of serpentinites, peridotites and other ultrabasics covered with lateritic weathering crusts that range from 15 to 80 feet in thickness.
The soil was made of a lateritic crust partially covered by flattened sandy dunes, stabilized by the vegetation.
