Ivanhoe sets aside the long-established Western practice of Latinizing the names of the initial two masters of that tradition, by calling them by their Chinese names in the Pinyin spelling: Kongzi, instead of Confucius; Mengzi, instead of Mencius.
It is necessary to add, however, that although Ortiz Cofer shows throughout her work how the Caribbean has geographically extended itself to include parts of the US by Caribbeanizing and Latinizing even mainstream American culture, the Caribbean remains still "US-ed.
