(Placename) a city in Morocco, in Western Sahara: the capital of the former Spanish Sahara; port facilities begun in 1967 at Playa de El Aaiún 20 km (12 miles) away, following the discovery of rich phosphate deposits. Pop. (urban area): 164 000 (1998 est.)
