A city of northern Netherlands northeast of the Ijsselmeer. Chartered in 1435, it was noted for its manufacture of gold and silver articles from the 16th to the 18th century. Population: 92,300.

Henricus de Veno (who also wrote his name as de Veen and Van der Veen) was born in the Frisian capital Leeuwarden around 1574.
Born on June 17, 1898, in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, Maurits Comelis Escher struggled with his school studies, especially math.
A judge in the northern city of Leeuwarden ordered the felon diner to serve a three-month jail term Monday after he confessed to ordering meals and wine at restaurants around the Netherlands, only to plead poverty when the bill came.
