Incidentally, the US ship's captain responsible for the shooting down in 1988 of an Iranian airliner, which killed 290 people and probably led to a revenge attack at Lockerbie, was awarded the Legion of Merit by President Bush Sr "for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service as commanding officer".
Admiral Roughead's awards include the Defence Distinguished Service Medal, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Defence Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal and various unit and service awards.
Later, Legion of merit award was also presented to COAS.
