Tripoli, whose Lepcis Magna site of Roman ruins is reputed to be the largest and best preserved such site in the world, is already twinned with Madrid, Belgrade and Sarajevo.
To give one simple example: anyone in the second century who visited the great theatre in Lepcis Magna could see that its sponsor, Annobal Tapapius Rufus, son of Himilcho Tapapius, had been commemorated in the Augustan era with a Latin inscription of a typical sort--except that the inscription was not typical at all because it was incised bilingually in Punic as well as Latin and could still be read by Punic speakers in the second century.
Evidence gathered from artefacts in the museum shows Africans were represented at all levels of Roman society - from Victor, a freed slave from Morocco, to the Emperor Septimius Severus, who came to this area from Lepcis Magna in Libya, with the intention of conquering Scotland.
