Opponents of the Conservative program include teachers' unions, public sector trade unions, most of the big media, organizations like the YWCA (one of Canada's biggest providers of non-profit daycare), the NDP and Liberal parties, and other left-wing activists.
But the recent electoral setbacks for liberal parties do not mean that liberalism is dead.
The Egyptian government proved no match for the ability of the MB to form alliances with non-religious parties, such as the Labor and Liberal parties under the umbrella of the 1987 "Islamic Alliance," and for its penetration of civil society and professional organizations.
