Liberty Island

Lib·er·ty Island  (lbr-t) Formerly Bed·loe's Island (bdlz)
An island of southeast New York in Upper New York Bay southwest of Manhattan. The Statue of Liberty was placed on the island in 1885, using the star-shaped Fort Wood (built in 1841) as a base. Congress officially renamed the island in 1956.

Reservations are required for two National Park Service tours on Liberty Island, including the Observatory Tour, which features an elevator ride to the top of the pedestal for a view inside the statue through a glass ceiling.
The district was asked by the National Park Service to repair the Liberty Island seawall, "in the shadow of the great statue," said Anthony Ciorra, Project Manager, USACE, New York District.
Boaters are also reminded that permanent security zones remain in place within 150 yards off Liberty Island and Ellis Island, and 175 yards off the United Nations building.
