September is the month of Queen Lili'uokalani Canoe Races, Kailua, and Big Island and also food festival is organized in Lahaina by the name of a taste of Lahaina.
It was Queen Lili'uokalani, who was the last monarch of Hawaii and died in 1917 at the age of 79, who reinstated the art of hula - and opened it to participation by women - after missionaries who came to the islands in the 1820s had banished the dance.
