Together, 'Juneteenth' (Emancipation Day), Lincoln's birthday, Memorial Day, and (for an extended period) even July 4 witnessed virtually black-only celebrations throughout the South. The play was one of many presented by the park and recreation department in observance of Valentine's Day, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday and World Brotherhood Week. In 1955 schools were closed on Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday. |
