1. To be slow in leaving, especially out of reluctance; tarry. See Synonyms at stay1.
2. To remain feebly alive for some time before dying.
3. To persist: an aftertaste that lingers.
4. To proceed slowly; saunter.
5. To be tardy in acting; procrastinate.

To pass (a period of time) in a leisurely or aimless manner.

IAEve travelled the world, seen the forgotten silos on the plains, the rusting railroad cars, the forbidding watchtowers, the scavengers in the garbage, the fatigue-smudged faces, the refugees sprawled on the school room floor, the lonely lingerers, the freighters hardening the horizon, the beautiful and the damned.
I'm texting some people and there's a few lingerers, but no one serious.
Staring at the ruins of the village they send their Sudanese nurse to talk with a few of the lingerers, to offer blankets and plastic sheeting for shelter.
