The capital and largest city of Slovenia, in the central part of the country on the Sava River northwest of Zagreb, Croatia. Founded by Augustus in 34 b.c., it came under Hapsburg rule in a.d. 1277. In 1919 it passed to Yugoslavia, remaining under its rule until Slovenian independence in 1991. Population: 247,000.

Designed by the talented young partnership of Ofis, the structure has a sinuous elegance that recalls their earlier projects such as the museum extension in Ljubljana (AR December 2004) and house on Lake Bled (AR November 2005), in which inclined floor planes and spiralling ramps orchestrate a succession of dramatic promenades architecturales.
