a. A Native American people inhabiting the coastal area of California south of Los Angeles, associated during Spanish times with the missions of San Luis Rey and San Juan Capistrano.

The five tribes involved in the deal are the Pala Band of Mission Indians, the Pauma Band of Luiseno Indians, the Rumsey Band of Wintun Indians, the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians and the United Auburn Indian Community.

When the Catholic missionaries came to California, the Tongva were given the name Gabrieleno, for the Mission San Gabriel, just as my father's people were given the name Barbareno for the Mission Santa Barbara, our original names subjugated, lost--Diegeno, Luiseno, Gabrieleno, Ventureno, Barbareno, Purismeno, Obisbeno.
