a. A Native American people inhabiting the coastal area of California south of Los Angeles, associated during Spanish times with the missions of San Luis Rey and San Juan Capistrano.
b. A member of this people.

Although the name is sometimes said to mean "the jewel" (from the Spanish "la joya"), it is believed to be derived from a Native American language, that of the La Jolla band of Luiseno Indians, who inhabited the area for centuries before the arrival of the Spanish.
He served on numerous ships including: USS JOSEPH HEWES (DE 1078), USS GOODRICH (DD 831), USS LUISENO (ATF 156), USS CURRITUCK (AV 7), USS FORRESTAL (CV 59), and USS TRUXTON (CGN 35).
The five tribes involved in the deal are the Pala Band of Mission Indians, the Pauma Band of Luiseno Indians, the Rumsey Band of Wintun Indians, the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians and the United Auburn Indian Community.
