luteinizing hormone [ˈluːtɪɪˌnaɪzɪŋ] n (Life Sciences & Allied Applications / Biochemistry) a gonadotrophic hormone secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. In female vertebrates it stimulates ovulation, and in mammals it also induces the conversion of the ruptured follicle into the corpus luteum.
