We were referred to Great Ormond Street and he was diagnosed with haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a blood disorder that cripples the immune system and affects only one in 500,000 people.
The first patient was a 4-year-old girl with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, who had 4 distinct respiratory specimens that tested positive during a 2-month period.
Her niece, 7-year-old Yelea Bueno, was diagnosed in 2002 with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, a rare and often fatal disease that strikes one in a million, usually young kids.
