In 1902, at age 20, he became a member of the Photo Secession, a group that believed that photography could be an art, and this recognition by the Secession's founder, Alfred Stieglitz, meant that Coburn's work was chosen for reproduction in the famed Secession magazine Camera Work (1903-1917).
