A city of southwest Russia on the western coast of the Caspian Sea. Founded in 1844, it is an oil-refining and transshipment center. Population: 465,000.

He also says a police officer lost a hand after an explosion on Sunday in the regional capital, Makhachkala.
In separate incidents in Dagestan's capital Makhachkala, a police car came under fire and two policemen were wounded by an unknown attacker, police said, adding that the same sniper could have been to blame for both incidents.
