The second is a treatment of 21 species of tree ferns in a broad sense (including the genera Alsophila, Cnemidaria, Cibotium, Culcita, Cyathea, Dicksonia, Lophosoria, Marattia, and Sphaeropteris).
Marattioid ferns first appeared in the middle carboniferous, and fossils assignable to the extant genus Marattia date to the late Triassic (Hill and Camus, 1986).
