By August 1944, the American 5th fleet had captured Saipan, Tinian, and Guam, and had destroyed Japan's naval aviation force at what became known as "The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot.
He began his wartime service as an anti-aircraft gunner aboard the aircraft carrier USS San Jacinto (CVL-30) just in time for the invasion of Saipan and the Marianas Turkey Shoot, a battle in which 300 Japanese aircraft were shot down.
