As Robert Louis Wilken makes clear in his contribution to "The Church's Bible" series, patristic and medieval commentators drew from the pages of Isaiah both the promise and fulfillment of the coming Messiah, but Isaiah was also crucial for the development of Mariology.
Only twenty-two of the many sermons he must have preached survive, some fragmented; the fourth, given at the Council of Ephesus (June 431) remains the classic exposition of Mariology.
What this means of course is that he can dodge all post-Freudian, modern biblical, post-modernist, psycholinguistic, and most significantly all feminist critiques of Mariology.
