Marne (märn)

A river, about 523 km (325 mi) long, of northeast France flowing generally northwest to the Seine River. It was the scene of heavy fighting in World War I (1914 and 1918) and World War II (1944).

2. (Placename) a river in NE France, rising on the plateau of Langres and flowing north, then west to the River Seine, north of Paris: linked by canal with the Rivers Saône, Rhine, and Aisne; scene of two unsuccessful German offensives (1914, 1918) during World War I. Length: 525 km (326 miles)
