THE Mass Observation project, started in the 1930s, is the inspiration behind artist Jane Hughes's latest exhibition.
Famous for their pictures of everyday life in Britain, Spender and Julian Trevelyan, whose work is also featured, were commissioned by the Mass Observation movement in 1937 to photograph a range of aspects of working-class life in Bolton.
In those times of uncertainty, volunteers of almost every age, class and occupation recorded their lives and thoughts in diaries for the Mass Observation project.
