He first analyzes Alessandro Piccolomini's influential Commentarium de certitudine mathematicarum (1547), which denied the status of demonstrationes potissimae to mathematical proofs, but admitted the possibility of a scientia communis to all mathematical disciplines, and then presents the views of Francesco Barozzi, Petrus Ramus, Giacomo Zabarella, Benito Pereira, Adriaan van Roomen, and Giuseppe Biancani.
On the whole, "Proof" finds a happy medium between linear drama and the utter confusion that could result from protracted dramatic investigation into the insanity-genius conundrum, or the relationship between reality and mathematical proofs, which aren't nearly as important as the human relationships at the center of the story.
Yet, for mathematicians, it is raised above "popularization" by the fact that it actually contains mathematical proofs and exercises, rather than merely talking about them.
