The matriculation diploma
was dropped when it became clear that it amounted to less than the sum of its parts and was not going to be taken seriously by universities or employers.
Instead, pupils will get a matriculation diploma
based on test results and extra-curricular activities such as sport and music.
Apart from GVNQs, GCSEs, vocational GCSEs, AS-levels, A-levels and Super A-levels, kids will also need the Matriculation Diploma
which doesn't just include exam results but also takes into account sport and voluntary work.
To bring that about, she announced a raft of changes, including more vocational qualifications, a new Matriculation Diploma for all school-leavers and the end of compulsory foreign languages for 14 to 16-year-olds.
But the proposal for a three-tier Matriculation Diploma, covering achievement in areas such as volunteering as well as academic and vocational qualifications, could eventually see GCSEs absorbed into this "over-arching award".
