Carl Maunch, a German geologist and explorer was in 1871 the first European to visit and write about Great Zimbabwe.
Apparently the first discovery of cobalt minerals was made by a German, Carl von Maunch, about the year 1875-76, who opened up the mine on "Kruis River" farm, and who mined, collected and sent away hand picked ore by wagon to Durban, a distance of approximately 600 miles.
